Unitarian Universalist Programs
In addition to being a professional folk duo, the members of February Sky present UU services as we travel with our music. We have been on the UU circuit riding path since 1998. We are full-service presenters, providing all the music, leading of hymns and/or congregational songs, Intergenerational Moment, etc. We also make and print our own orders of service based on the standard OOS of the hosting church. It is nice to have someone introduce us, and/or do the "home church" elements, e.g. Joys and Concerns, announcements, etc. but we can handle those too if necessary. Services are all music-based, but are very much services, and NOT concerts. A sampling of titles and topics is below. We also have services for most Earth-Based holiday celebrations, the homecoming/water communion that many UU churches have the Sunday after Labor Day, Easter (for UUs!), Thanksgiving and other holidays. If your church has a need for a particular theme or topic, we can craft a service for it.
A sampling of service topics is below.
(These first two are even more music based than usual, and are very relevant to current times).
Service Title: “Come and Sing a Simple Song of Freedom”
Presenters: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
There is so much more to loving one’s country than waving a flag and saying “My country right or wrong.” We will share and reflect on some of the protest and freedom affirming songs that have changed our own and other people’s lives for the better.
Service Title: “Quite Early Morning - The Life, Times and Music of Pete Seeger”
Presenters: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
Peter Seeger was a singer, songwriter and activist. He was also a lifelong Unitarian Universalist. Through his music he became an advocate for the disadvantaged, the poor, the oppressed, and the exploited. He was also a civil rights and environmental activist. We will explore the far reaching influence of this remarkable man.
Service Title: “Falling In Love With Being Together – Why We ‘Do Church’”
Presenters: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
Human beings seem to have an innate need for connection and belonging. For many, this is met by family, or by work, or by other activities where people come together for a common purpose. Many Unitarian Universalists harbor beliefs and viewpoints which tend to be a bit out of the mainstream. For us, a church welcoming all, as long as they respect the inherent worth and dignity of every person, can become a place to find support, togetherness and love.
Service Title: “Building a Cathedral or Cutting Up a Stone”
Presenters: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
It has been truly said that “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.” When things don’t work out in the ways we thought we wanted, it can be easy to become angry, bitter and perpetually unhappy. But often what is needed is a simple shift in perspective – it really is all in the way we look at it.
NOTE: This one is lots of fun and is NOT shallow or frivolous.
Title: "I’m Gonna Wear Red Today – The Spirituality and Aesthetics of Clothing"
Presenters: February Sky (Susan Urban & Phil Cooper)
The clothing we choose to wear is more than just a way to cover our bodies, it is a statement to the world of who we are. This will not be a service on being “fashionable,” but on developing one’s own unique style that is independent of fleeting fashion trends. Everyone who attends this service is invited to wear something that expresses who they are and that makes them feel good to be seen by others!
Service Title: “Written In Their Eyes – Historical Awareness as a Spiritual Path”
Presenters: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
Phil and Susan are musicians whose repertoire includes a great deal of music that is hundreds of years old. They will share their reflections on how that music, and the stories of the people and events behind it, has not only enhanced their own lives, but has also opened the minds of many of their listeners to the power of history. Phil and Susan will wear period garb for this service, and attendees are encouraged to do likewise if they wish!
Service Title: Strength, Vision and Courage: Songs by Women About Women
Presenter: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
As in many other fields, women tend to have a hard time being taken seriously as songwriters. Yes, their writing is subtly different from men’s, and this is seen as making it inferior rather than “different therefore equal.” But many well-crafted and meaningful songs have been written by women about women. This service will focus on a number of them.
Service Title: “Mist Around The Bend – On the Possibility of Co-Existing Realities”
Presenters: February Sky (Phil Cooper & Susan Urban)
From the old Irish tales of the Faerie folk and the English legend of Avalon, to modern vampire lore and ghost stories, stories of other realities co-existing with our own, although not ordinarily accessible to us, are common in cultures all over the world. Do alternate realities actually exist, or are they pure fantasy? Do they become "real" when we have the experience of brushing up against them? We will consider these questions in song and spoken word.
